Guidelines for Handling Treatment and Disposal of Waste Generated during Treatment / Diagnosis / Quarantine of COVID-19 Patients

The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change has published guidelines for the management of waste generated during diagnostics and treatment of COVID-19 suspected / confirmed patients.

Guidelines on disinfection of common public places including offices

Highlight:

The Health Services have published guidelines that aim to provide interim guidance about the environmental cleaning / decontamination of common public places including offices in areas reporting COVID-19, including that:

-office spaces, including conference rooms must be cleaned every evening after office hours or early in the morning before the rooms are occupied
-outdoor area cleaning and disinfection efforts must be targeted to frequently touched/contaminated surfaces such as bus stops, railway platforms, parks, roads, etc; and
-sanitary workers must use separate sets of cleaning equipment for toilets (mops, nylon scrubber) and separate sets for sink and commode).

Prior to cleaning, the worker must wear disposable rubber boots, gloves (heavy duty), and a triple layer mask.

Consolidated Revised Guidelines on the measures to be taken by Ministries / Department of Government of India, State / UT Governments and State / UT authorities for containment of COVID-19 in the country

Highlight:

The Ministry of Home Affairs has published notice that the lockdown measures detailed in the Consolidated Guidelines of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for the containment of COVID-19 epidemic in the country, will continue to remain in force up to 3 May 2020.

In order to lessen the hardship on the public, select additional activities will be allowed, which will come into effect on 20 April 2020.

The Consolidated Guidelines deal with the:

-various activities, including all domestic and international air travel of passengers, and all passenger movement by trains, to remain prohibited across the country
-operation of various guidelines in Hotspots and containment zones
-select permitted activities allowed, with effect from 20 April 2020, in order to mitigate hardship to the public
-strict enforcement of the lockdown guidelines
-health services (including AYUSH) that are to remain functional
-agricultural and related activities that are to remain fully functional
-supply of essential goods
-movement of persons in various situations
quarantine orders; and
-offences and penalties for non-compliance.

Advisory on use of Homemade Protective Cover for Face and Mouth

Highlight:

The Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India has issued an advisory on the use of homemade protective covers for the face and mouth, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Advisory provides a simple outline of best practices to make, use and reuse face covers to enable NGOs and individuals to make face protection themselves.

The key criteria for proposed designs are:

-Ease of Access to Materials
-Ease of Making at Home; and
-Ease of Use and Reuse.

Wearing of face covers is especially recommended for people living in densely populated areas across India.
